Summer Reading Program
Located at the Mapleton City
Center
Each summer Mapleton sponsors a
reading program for children
ages 5 to 11. The topic
varies each year and the goal is
to encourage reading during the
summer months. This will
help children retain and improve
their reading skills before
school begins again. There
is no charge for the program and
the children can earn prizes and
books for the amount of reading
they accomplish. There may
be anywhere from 5 to 7 sessions
held on one morning a week for
one hour. These occur from
early June to mid July.
Older and younger children are
divided into two different
sessions on these mornings.
Watch for information given out
by the City in the newsletter or
for flyers sent home with
schoolchildren attending
Mapleton schools in May of each
year.
Mapleton Parent Resource
Center
Located in the basement of the
Mapleton City Center
This is a collection of early
learning materials geared to the
beginning reader. Parents
are encouraged to work with
their children and prepare them
to read. There are many
early reading books that are
leveled to grade, making it easy
for parents to choose materials
that match the progress of their
child. There are also
learning games, puzzles, flash
cards, computer CDs, and
parenting books. We have
leveled books for grades K to 8
and also some fun storybooks for
family reading.
The
self check-out system is
separate from the Bookmobile
check-out. Only parents
may borrow materials for a
two-week period and must fill
out a one-time registration
card. The system is
explained at the Center.
The hours of operation are the
same as the Utah County
Bookmobile Library.
Mapleton Family Literacy Center
Located in the basement of the Mapleton City Center
Tutoring in reading is offered to Mapleton residents through this
program. The program accepts both adults and children and the
goal is to increase reading skills to the desired grade level.
The student must be reading below grade level to qualify for this
help. There is a one-time charge of $20.00 (Residents) or
$30.00 (Non-Residents) to sign-up, but
there is no charge for the tutoring hours. A reading assessment test
is given to students to determine grade level at the beginning and
they are then assigned to a volunteer tutor. The tutoring
occurs twice a week for an hour each time. Hours of tutoring
may vary according to school and summer schedules and are determined
by the tutor and the student.
This program can only operate if volunteers come forward to help
another person improve the quality of their lives through increasing
reading skills. There is great satisfaction in helping someone
gain skills that will enhance their lives. Tutors must be at
least 15 years of age, be readers themselves, want to help others,
and must attend a two- hour tutor training session. Young people
would greatly benefit from volunteering at the Center. When
they later apply for college acceptance or scholarships the Center
will issue letters of recommendation that can be added to their
applications. Call Judy Whiting at 615-5042 or Brad
Brinkerhoff at 489-8073 to volunteer or to have a person screened to
enter the program.
Story Time and Preschool Hour for Toddlers and Preschoolers
Located in the basement of the Mapleton City Center.
Story Time is held year round at 10:30 am at the Library on Tuesday
mornings for one hour. It’s purpose it to prepare children for
learning, reading, and to attend school. Various fun topics
are presented and the children listen to stories and do a craft.
The Preschool hour is held on Thursdays at the same time and runs
only during the school year. It is similar in focus and in the
activities presented. Mothers may volunteer to help with the
presentations and a parent or other adult must accompany the
children during the class.
